But there’s one decision most drivers never think about until it’s too late. Where their vehicle is towed. If your car isn’t drivable, that one choice can affect how much time, money, and inconvenience you deal with in the days that follow.
Most people assume the tow truck at the scene is their only option. In many situations, it isn’t. If it’s safe and practical, having your vehicle towed to your home instead of a storage yard can make the insurance process much easier and may help you avoid unnecessary towing or storage charges. Keep in mind that the best option depends on the circumstances, including safety, law enforcement direction, and your insurance policy.
If your vehicle isn’t drivable, your first call after 911 should be to your roadside assistance provider if you have one. Many roadside assistance memberships, insurance policies, and even some credit cards include towing benefits. Using those benefits may eliminate the towing charge altogether.
If you can’t wait for your roadside assistance provider because law enforcement needs the roadway cleared, ask the tow truck driver whether they can take your vehicle directly to your home instead of a tow yard. If that isn’t possible, see if they’ll move it to a safe location off the roadway while you wait for your roadside assistance provider, if permitted.
Having your vehicle at home gives you time to contact your insurance company, choose a repair shop if the vehicle is repairable, or arrange for it to be inspected if it’s a total loss. Without the pressure of daily storage fees, you can make those decisions on your schedule instead of rushing to avoid additional charges.
Every accident is different, and there are situations where a vehicle can’t be taken home because of safety concerns, police direction, severe damage, or insurance requirements. But when you have a choice, it’s worth considering before the tow truck leaves the scene.
